Paintings and mosaics in Pompeii and Ercolano:

Sinopite

  • ITwo lines of edging mark out two quadrangular fields on the rough plasterwork, and onto this were outlined in ochre a sketch of some architectural features. As in other cases in which the preparatory graffiti for frescoes have come to light as a result of the deterioration of subsequent layers of paint, we can detect the hand of an experSinopitet drawer, on account of the perspective arrangement of the lines in the view beyond the bow-window on the left. Although this is only a rough sketch, there is evidence nonetheless of a number of outlines which are of only secondary importance, such as the recipients on the trabeation. The drawing which has been preserved on the right-hand side seems to be that of an arched niche with an apse consisting of sturdy side pillars.
