Profile of young woman
|
The
dilapidated condition of this piece prevents us from having any
clear idea of which action the girl has just carried out; she is
portrayed looking to the left, maybe at the object she had
previously been holding in her hands. Her head is crowned with
ivy or vine leaves, but her composed manner suggests she is not
a Bacchante but rather an Suppliant, one of those figures found
on architectural pieces on the upper part of a Fourth Style wall.
The delicacy of the lines and the expressive intensity of the
face in profile have led some to suggest that this was a figure
drawn from life, although our knowledge of how frescoes were
made in ancient times, and the insignificant position occupied
by this piece on the wall, discourage this hypothesis.
